Unbundled Legal Services for Do-It-Yourself Litigants

Pro se litigants account for  almost 50% of divorce cases filed. Pro se litigant is another term for the do-it-yourself person.  Pro se litigants are candidates for unbundled legal services also known as limited scope representation. In an unbundled services model for legal services,   you pick  from an ala carte menu on a pay-as-you go basis.  You pick only the services for which you want particular help.  You do not pay a large retainer and there is no hourly rate.    For example, in electing unbundled services you  may buy a document review or document preparation.  You may buy an hour of legal coaching or mediation preparation. The Minnesota Rules of Professional Responsibility authorizes attorneys to offer unbundled services to consumers.  I initiated unbundled services and limited scope representation this year as part of my firm’s access to justice commitment.   Clients like the pay-as-you go for what you need model  as an alternative to paying a large retainer.    I also began providing unbundled services online this year in a secure virtual online law office.  The online option is convenient because clients can use their files online 24/7 from home.  Clients don’t have to take a day off work to meet with me because we can communicate in the secure virtual online law office for whatever unbundled services he or she may need.  Check out the virtual online law office and let me know what you think.  Link to: www.katewillmorelaw.com and click on direct law or menu of services to reach the online office.
