Where Do I Go From Here– A Flow Chart of Divorce Proceedings by Minnesota Family Attorney

Court procedure can be a mystery.  Clients often ask what happens after the opposing party is served?   A family law matter, including a divorce, can move along several different paths.  How the case proceeds is dependent upon the actions of the parties; such as, if one party is served and fails to respond, then that party is defaulted; or, if the parties’ elect to mediate or otherwise compromise, then the case moves along a settlement track to the Court for approval; and, finally if the parties cannot resolve their differences, then the case moves to trial.  The Court will then decide all areas of dispute at the trial and issue an order and judgment.   The flow chart is a visual depiction of the various routes that a case may take through the system.
